Locked Up

This semester, in order to pick up a little extra cash, I have been substitute teaching at local montessori schools. This one actually isn't so local, it's down on Manchaca and Ben White, but whatever. Just about an hour's bus ride away. So anyway, that's what I did today, from 2:30-now. Normally I leave around 6:30, but today was...different.

As a friday afternoon sub at this place, it's my job to sort of clean things up after all the kids leave for the weekend. I sweep the floors, wash the dishes, clean the nap mats, etc. I then lock the door behind me on the way out, and finally the gate around the school yard. Apparently, however, it is customary for the last parent to lock the gate after him or herself before driving off. Whoever usually does afternoons has a key, and just locks the front door behind themselves. So on my very first afternoon working here, I got locked inside the schoolyard, and out of the building. I was trapped. Fortunately, it is a chain-link fence that borders the school, so I managed to hop it with my backpack, amid a couple wary stares from people at the gas station next door.
The next week, I told the mother of the kid who's usually the last one here to just leave the gate open so I could get out. That was our routine for the past several weeks. This week, however, it was the kid's dad. Soooo after they had driven off, I was in the kitchen doing dishes when it hit me: he probably locked me in. So i went out to look and what do you know, locked! Fortunately, however, this time I was inside the house still, so i had lots of numbers to call. After calling around, the woman who leaves right before me agreed to come back and lock up after me. So this is me, waiting to be let out...

oh my life.
